Home Is Where The Heart Is

Last night we were invited to a party over our friends, Christa and Jeremy’s, house.
These are high school friends of ours that we don’t get to see very much anymore so we were both interested in hanging out over there for a bit.

But then…

The day kind of took over.
Two soccer practices early, one being a scrimmage.
Chas left for a movie.
Rhyse and Greer had a playdate.
Charlie and I and the two NEW Littles :) ran errands all afternoon long, not returning home until around 6:00pm.

And suddenly, I realized that I was craving a family night.
We’ve had a really nutty, busy week and it was a light one compared to what’s about to happen this week as we pick up preschool for two children, the day-long co-op for all of us on Thursday, and nightly (no joke, NIGHTLY) soccer games for the older three.

So we stayed in.
Charlie made pizza with the kids and then, since the kitchen was already a flour pit, I made apple-scented playdough with them when he was done. (More on that later.)

We cooked, we puttered, I did some much needed laundry, blogged a minute (fine, or TWO), ordered backpacks for the Littles (back-ordered until the end of October–nothing like waiting til the last friggin’ minute.  NICE, Ang).  Really just…life maintenenced a bit.

Though we missed hanging out with friends, we needed this for ourselves.
It was an absolutely delicious family home evening.

Regret

Yesterday was Charlie’s birthday and it was a “big” one.
And I’d like to say it was a great day for him but the truth is, it wasn’t.

This is the second time we’ve had a baby on his “big” birthday–I had just had Greer back when he turned 30 and so, we really couldn’t do much to celebrate.
That year, I snagged some pretty fabulous VIP tickets to Cirque which happened to be in town and it was a really great night for us.
Us WITH our newborn, that is :)

His 35th found us in a similar situation and despite my almost booking four different excursions for the “three” of us (me, Charlie and our wee bitty chaperone, Luxe), it was just not in the cards.
I could not get him away from work (our 6th child) as it’s his super busy season and he couldn’t take off any time.
(Sidenote: if I can find the blog time, which I can’t, I’ll post all the super-neat-yet-relatively-close-getaways that I rummaged up in case anyone else is looking for a quick over-nighter with all the swanky trimmings.)

The reason that his birthday wasn’t great this year wasn’t about that though.
About not getting away.
I know better than to try and sneak off in August–I just wanted to do something memorable and that’s what I came up with.

What made it less than spectacular was that we got into an argument in the morning that extended through the afternoon and into the evening, thereby ruining the entire day.
While the tiff wasn’t without its merit, it didn’t need to drag on like it did and that part of it was definitely my fault.
Sometimes when my back is up, I can be incredibly stubborn and no matter how well I’m apologized to (he offered up a near perfect one, to be honest), it’s just not enough to snap me out of it and make me let it go.
He did his best but I wasn’t to be swayed I guess and the plans that I DID make (a surprise picnic and a round of disc golf with the whole family) were botched as well.

Eventually, we sorted our funk out and put ourselves back on the path of harmony but it did put a major damper on his day.
And for that, I am sorry.

In the end, I don’t think all was lost.
Even though it didn’t even remotely resemble the birthday “party” I had hoped it to be, we were all once again smiling by bedtime.

Trust me, THAT was something to celebrate :)

We’ll try this one more time over the weekend–hopefully we can carve out some private family time so that we can properly “do” the 35th.
AGAIN :)

So what do you give a guy who never has any wants?
(Seriously. It’s almost maddening.)

IMG_0342-1

You give him a knife so sharp he can cut the world in half if he so chooses.
(You’ll be happy to know that I gave this to him POST disagreement. Haha. And ignore the mess–it was tested upon opening.)

And I thought this thing was super cool–a knife block without any holes.
Love it.

A self-timered family photo to mark the occasion:

And one with all of his babies:

Despite absolutely fuming all day, I baked him cupcakes.
There’s forgiveness in there somewhere, right?

Holding his girls–one of which just so happens to be singing “Happy Birthday, dear daaaaaddy” at the top of her lungs:

May all your wishes come true!

(Well, except the one where I vaporize mid-argument. That’s actually called a FANTASY and there isn’t a “make a fantasy!” cake anywhere to be found. Lucky for me, eh? :))

Summer Evenings, Wet & Wild Style

Clearly I have escaped Luxe’s suction-cup grasp on me for the moment as I’m cranking out posts filled with pictures and low on words as fast as I can :)

While our wee bitty pool sufficed for the day, we packed up and headed to a bigger pool to play away the evening hours! I can’t take Luxe out during the day right now so we aren’t swimming as a family until after the sun goes down.
But once it does, out we come in full fun-seeking force!

After Dark

Posted by: Angi  :  Category: Family Night, Family Outings, Friends, Good Times, In The Good Old Summertime, Luxe's First Days

It was the quintessential summer night, I swear it to be true.

We sat out back in the dark, in front of a little fire, roasting marshmallows and making s’mores amidst the ringing laughter of the children, the chirping of the crickets, and the most awesome of summer breezes swirling around us.

It was darn near magical.

Good times, good friends, good memories made right here…

A Change Will Do You Good. Won’t It?

Posted by: Angi  :  Category: Charlie, Family Night, Good Times, Just Running My Mouth Again, Musings, Never-Ending Home Crap, Rooms Of Dreams

Are you wondering what’s with all of these bedroom photos all of a sudden?
I NEVER take photos in my bedroom and it’s not because I’m a privacy freak.
(I’m not.)
It’s just that we never hang in our bedroom.
Or we never DID, I should say.
Because right now, I can’t seem to get out of it!

Let me update you a bit:

Since Charlie cut those night-tables down the other weekend, we’ve added new bedding (love it) AND the granite tops to those tables! I have the photos to go with his how-to project (his first working with slabs of granite!) but thought I’d share first what else we’ve done.

Our bedroom has been progressing over the last month: new closet lights, new over-the-bed lights, new fan, new blinds, upgraded fixtures…and then the new tables, bedding and…and something else.

From my spot in the bed, this is what I normally stare at:

IMG_5871-1

A whole bunch of nothing.

And I’ve had GOBS of ideas of what to fill this space with that mostly revolved around framed photos of my family.
But since they’d be totally facing me in bed, it almost seemed a little…weird…to have people staring at me all night while I sleep.
Does that sound strange?
I mean, I know they’re my family and all but I suppose I was always hesitant to slate it on the Grit List because I just didn’t know if I really and truly wanted hundreds of eyeballs looking my way all day and night.

But what else could we do with the space?

Well, after much deliberation (literally like a month’s worth), we decided to do THIS:

IMG_5944-2

And so far, we love it.
LOVE IT!

Though let me tell you my hesitations and why.
We’re not what I would call huge t.v. people.
It’s not that we’re t.v-free or on a mission to be t.v-free (I happen to thing a BIT of t.v. is just fine for kids. Who do you think taught Greer to count to ten in Spanish, ME?), it’s just that we don’t sit around a lot during the day.

Our downstairs t.v. has never been an issue for my kids–meaning, they aren’t prone to couch potato-ing.
(Now, the Playstation is a whole different beast.)
And Charlie and I normally sit down at night after all are tucked in and watch a bit of trash t.v. together and look forward to what Housewife is flipping tables this time :)

So it’s not that we don’t like t.v.

I just have not ever wanted it on our second floor level–it just seemed very intrusive to me.
We’ve had a strict “no bedroom” policy for several years now and I’ve not missed it one single bit.
We’ve not had a t.v. in our bedroom and none of our children have one, either.
(And will not. I’m holding firm on this with them as I don’t see ANY benefit to giving my 13-year-old every reason in the world NOT to join in on family time. He already has a laptop, a cell phone, and an iPod touch to diddle with in there and that’s ENOUGH!)

But recently, I began to think that it might be nice to have another t.v around for two main reasons.

1.) I would have loved to closet myself off in my bedroom during my three-month-long bout of morning sickness. I couldn’t read but I could and did lay around and watch t.v. But I was still very accessible to everyone and when Charlie was home and could manage the kids, I craved my own kind of quiet.
And to not be climbed on or woken up or asked for a drink of water.
Since I’m heading into that newborn period, I’m thinking that some of my “own kind of quiet” will do Baby and me some good and if I can catch up on Grey’s Anatomy during my 34th nursing of the day, then I should.

2.) There have been times on the weekends recently when the boys have been reluctant to give up the basement t.v. (we only have two in the house–one in the family room and one in the basement) for movie purposes and Charlie and I have been reluctant to watch “Max and Ruby” for the one zillionth time, but it’s left the Littles in a lurch. I started thinking…maybe they’d be just fine snuggled in my bed with “Toy Story” together and everyone would be happy.

Plus, what else was I going to do with that wide open wall space? :)

In the end, I’m REALLY very glad we decided to add this t.v. to our bedroom.
And I’m also really glad we waited until this point.
I like that our kids know that you CAN live without a box blaring sounds and images in your room whenever you want it.
Reading in bed isn’t a bad option, either.

And honestly, that’s still my main thing though suddenly, as my nest has cozied, my laptop has been making nightly appearances in here!
I’m blogging in bed right now and it’s just…relaxing to me.
I can look around and see this place really coming together and it just makes me happy.

We’re getting ready to have movie night with the big boys in here starting in just a few minutes as they’ve been asking to see “Jurassic Park” for six months now.
We’d been putting them off because Greer usually joins us for movie nights (and this is too much for her) but since she was up late last night playing around with me :), she went to bed early tonight, leaving us with no excuse not to grab our big kids and snuggle in our big bed together and watch some some big dinosaurs on our brand-new, big tv!

One more thing–
We happened to have the most perfect, dreary, rainy day today with which to test out our new t.v.

IMG_5950-1

And can you guess what we were so spellbound by?
(Other than the fact that we now have a t.v. upstairs???)

IMG_5964-1

Love this movie.
(”SQUIRREL!” That’s my favorite part, strangely enough. Okay, okay and the sweet love story at the beginning. Sniff.)

Big Enough

Alright, fine, twist my arm–I’ll post again.

Charlie is still putting Greer to bed so I have some time on my hands (the girl can stretch out bedtime with him for an UNIMAGINABLE chuck of night).

We started our evening at the perfect spot for dining for a gathering of ten and an all-out kid favorite–the Japanese Steakhouse!
This is by far my kids’ “special place” of choice and luckily, Jenny’s family was on-board with that program, too.

This is pretty much how the night went for these two giggly girls:

IMG_3011

And after dinner we were off to the Lincoln Theatre for the performance!
It was very…Seussical and weird and fanciful.
Most importantly, it was just fun to get out with these older kids for a bit–it always is.

Jenny, thanks for dating me! :)
We all had such a fantastic time with you guys and are looking forward to much more family fun times ahead.
Starting when your pool opens.
Sign. Me. Up. Sister!
(And I’d say “See you Monday!” but it’s more like, “See you 643 times this week as we pass kids from place to place!”
I’m so glad you’re crazy like me.)

“Date Night With The James”

Posted by: Angi  :  Category: Family Night, Family Outings, Friends, Good Times, We're Dating Our Kids

That little phrase was tossed around all week long in anticipation for a dual family event for my family and Jenny’s.

Awhile back, we snagged some tickets for our families to see “Seussical the Musical” together and last night was our big date together!
We had a wonderful time–what’s so great about getting together with Jenny’s gang is just that everyone pairs up so nicely and all get along smashingly, including the adults :)
We left our little boys at home, perhaps in a year or so they’ll join in on the fun but for now, it was just a night out for the big kids and the parents.

As usual, I wanted to document the occasion with a quick family photo and sweetly enough, Creux wasn’t about to be left out of THIS part of the night! He knew he was staying behind with his beloved Emily (thank you, Emily!!!) but darn it, he was sneaking into that picture and there wasn’t ANY convincing him otherwise.

IMG_3010

Certainly you know this isn’t the only piece of footage from the night, right?
You know I have a slew of snapshot-y moments to share, don’t you?
Cause I do.
But I’ve spent the last hour scrubbing stains off the basement carpet (WHAT do they do down there? I can’t figure it out! We eat and drink the same things but you’d think they suck down tar or something and drop glops of it all over the place from the looks of things. Sheesh.) and I’m currently ready for a movie night.
Or a smoothie night.
Or a soak-in-the-bathtub-for-three-hours kind of night.
Unfortunately for me, I don’t HAVE a bathtub :)
Which might be a good thing actually because I could get IN, but I’m no longer sure I could get OUT on my own.

Oh, the joys of pregnancy…
